THE ORPHANAGE

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

Likoni Aids Orphanage is home to children and teen-agers of both sexes aged between five and eighteen years.

The orphanage was created in the year 2000 with a number of 12 boys and girls. Today the number of children has grown to 47.

Most of the children became orphans because of their parents dying of AIDS.

Some of them have been at the orphanage for many years; others have been brought here more recently. Some have recollections of their life before the orphanage and can tell you about their own story.

In most cases when the children became orphaned their relatives had to bring them to the orphanage as they themselves were living in very poor conditions and therefore were not in a position to keep them.

At the orphanage the children enjoy basic needs (food and accommodation) and they can attend both Primary and Secondary School.

The orphanage is situated in a very poor area, the Timbwani slum, just outside Mombasa, where many workers and families live on or below the poverty line.

The home is charitable and therefore depends on donations from well wishers in term of material and financial support.

LIKONI ORPHANAGE VISION AND MISSION

To save the lives of orphans for whom there is no place to go.

To meet the basic primary needs of the orphans enrolled at the orphanage.

To equip teen-agers with daily living skills to prepare them for when they will finish their formal studies and they will leave the orphanage.

To create a place where each child feels he/she belongs. To give them a sense of self-worth.
